SUMMARY:EmpowerLA Youth Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) is proud to introduce the EmpowerLA Youth Conference\, inviting youth from each region throughout the Los Angeles City to participate in a one-day event with various workshops and presentations. The 2024 EmpowerLA Youth Conference will take place on Saturday January 27\, 2024 from 9am-4pm. \nTopics include history and purpose of the Neighborhood Council system\, Brown Act and Robert’s Rules of Order\, as well as Neighborhood Council 101s. The program will also include speeches by city officials or elected officials\, perhaps the Mayor. The program is executed in partnership with Departments such as Recreation & Parks and Sanitation. At the conclusion of the conference\, attendees will receive resources\, including a headshot photo\, to encourage their personal civic engagement and leadership in the community. \nApply by December 18\, 2023

DESCRIPTION:The annual Congress of Neighborhoods happens next week on Saturday\, September 23rd at LA City Hall! \nWhile the event is free to attend\, you’ll get free parking\, breakfast\, and lunch if you RSVP to the event by visiting: http://NeighborhoodCongress.LA \nPlease sign up ASAP\, to help the caterer get an accurate headcount and ensure there’s enough food for everyone. \nThe Congress is a day of education and networking that gathers more than 500 Neighborhood Council leaders each year together with local elected officials and staff from City departments and other LA-area agencies. NC members get the opportunity to learn from each other; meet their City Councilmembers and others who represent them; and connect with service providers. \nThis is the first time the Congress has been held in person since 2019! Neighborhood Council board and committee members\, as well as members of the public who are interested in community service and local issues\, are all welcome to attend. \nEVENT SCHEDULE + WORKSHOPS \nThe event takes place from 8am – 4:30pm\, but you may come and go as you please. See the event schedule here. \nMore than 20 workshops and panel discussions are being offered this year\, in 3 sessions. You can attend any that you like;  there are sessions on everything from hot issues like homelessness and housing\, to skill-building on topics like leadership or land use issues. SUMMARY:Reform LA: Commission Support Systems
DESCRIPTION:The Ad Hoc Committee on Governance Reform has begun its listening sessions on potential reforms to our city’s redistricting process. This is a historic effort which is being led by the Council President and the more public participation the better\, as reforms recommended by the committee will need to go to the full City Council and the voters for adoption\, as many reforms would require changes to the City Charter. \nListening sessions will take place over the next few weeks and into the summer.
