DWP Reform Meeting
May 19, 2016 @ 6:00 pm
Join us on Thursday! Council President Wesson, Mayor Garcetti and the South Los Angeles Alliance of Neighborhood Councils are partnering on a DWP Reform meeting at the West Angeles Performing Arts Theater at 6:00 PM.
On the November 2016 ballot there will be a measure asking voters to change the City Charter to provide the DWP with more autonomy. It has been suggested the DWP should run more like a private company eliminating the need to get permission from City Hall in regards to certain decisions.
Some of the suggestions are:
Making the DWP board full-time and paid and giving them more power instead of part-time and volunteer.
Giving the General Manager more power.
Relieving the DWP of having to adhere to Civil Service rules and protections and allowing them to hire directly off the street.
Hiring their own legal department and no longer using the City Attorney
Increasing their spending limit before getting permission from City Hall from $150,000 to $5 million.
With cloudy water in some parts of Los Angeles and rate hikes to cover infrastructure renovations in some areas we need to be as informed, engaged and involved as possible.
The meeting will provide community leadership information regarding how DWP is currently run, what governance reforms they are suggesting and provide attendees the opportunity to suggest additions to the ballot measure currently being drafted.
Lastly, there have been past complaints about City leadership not being inclusive in regards to South L.A. residents. This is a good faith effort on behalf of CP Wesson and the Mayor to be inclusive and we need to FILL THE ROOM!
