Program Description:
Jazz is known as a vehicle for self expression as well as a genre that reflects the times. Many of our most creative jazz artists were in the vanguard of using their platform to address historical moments where marginalization, oppression, and brutality existed.

Dr. Ronald C. McCurdy will moderate a conversation with a panel of scholars and educators to discuss the role jazz has played in mitigating and disrupting racism and inequality.

In addition, Chris Powe Quartet will perform compositions by Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Max Roach and Pharoah Sanders that invoked an anti-racist message.
