The Embracing Vermont event, was held September 26, 2026 to bring the community together to clean and beautify Vermont Avenue as part of the Mayor’s Shine LA initiative. Community members, students from SEED LA High School—the first public boarding school in Los Angeles—UCLA participants, and members of Crenshaw Christian Center Church all came together to help clean the surrounding community.
The event also included a community resource fair, which is where our photos were taken.
Guests and community partners in attendance included Mayor Karen Bass, Capri Maddox, Esq., representatives from Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson’s team, Pastor Frederick K. Price Jr. and his wife from Crenshaw Christian Center, and Dr. Betty Price (the woman pictured in the wheelchair). Rebuilding and revitalizing Vermont Avenue has been part of Dr. Price’s vision, and she was also recognized and honored with awards during the event.
Other organizations and community partners in attendance included the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD), BMO Bank, LA Sanitation, and Umma Health.
From the ECSWANDC team, Tunisia Johnson, Dominica Wilson, Daniel Fuller, and Sha-Dé Chapman were in attendance and participated in the event.
